TV Show: Jessica Jones (2015)

Since I have jumped on the bandwagon of „Go Women in Film (and TV)“ I would have had to be living without internet the last couple of days to miss the NEWS of „Jessica Jones“, the new Marvel/Netflix TV Series starring Krysten Ritter.

It was a cold November 20th…no, just kidding. Well, not about the weather, just about the way I am going to talk about finding out about this show. Actually it might be possible that I heard about it before, because when I went onto my Netflix last Friday it did feel familiar reading the name on my Spotlight Feed. I actually didn’t want to start a new series since I am watching about 8 right now and it’s not good for me to burry myself with TV episodes, but, as you can assume reading this post, I wasn’t strong enough.

First I need to give a big shoutout to Netflix. THANK YOU!! Finally it makes sense why the internet makes the world a tiny village. Honestly, if you are a film and tv geek it’s sometimes very heart (and nearly heart breaking) to live in a country like Austria. (It’s not nowhere but for Hollywood it is. Not shooting wise it’s getting there, but in the sense of  distribution.) You find out about THE coolest film ever and it only comes out in the States or if it manages to come across the big pond (I am always asking myself if they are swimming those film rolls across.) at all, it happens weeks or months later. WORST THING EVER! (And yes, we are talking about a first world problem here, but I am not perfect and that’s just something that concerns and affects me.) Not Netflix. I am still in tiny Austria and „Jessica Jones“ is released the same day as in the States…and the rest of the world. (I am having tears in my eyes writing this.)

Okay, did the Netflix acceptance speech thank you part. Now, secondly I have to say, this will, and I am sure of it, one day bite me in my Austrian ass, but I am expecting great things of Netflix Originals. I mean come on. „House of Cards“ I cannot wait for the new season. So, when it says not only Netflix but MARVEL on it….no words. I might not agree with the women ratio in the films, but they are still awesome!

So I clicked play…and I am proud to say I haven’t binge watched them all at once, because I wanted to. But that would have meant staying up until about 4 or 5 in the morning with an early call for work…no, I was able to keep it together. So now, it is Monday evening (by the time you will read this I am possibly one or two episodes further in), I am 5 episodes in and UH BOY I LOOOOOVE IT! The storyline is just super cool, finally an edgy woman who has everything an interesting character needs…and Krysten Ritter, she is sooooo good!

„Jessica Jones“ is a series about the Marvel’s comic character with the same name, a failed superhero who is trying to make it in New York by putting a front with her own PI (Private Investigator) office. The series unveils the character, her flaws and super powers in a gripping way that you really need to hold yourself back to not watch all 13 episodes at once (who’s that genius at Netflix who came up with the idea to release all episodes at once…we love you!). Only five episodes in and already so much has happened and still so many things are not revealed…I cannot wait.

And yes, I am repeating myself: FINALLY AN INTERESTING FEMALE CHARACTER! Yes, TV is by far more woman friendly than films are lately. (With Netflix again…man, can I work with you, I love you! being pioneers with „Orange is the New Black“ a mainly women cast series) With „Scandal“ and „How to Get Away With Murder“ (Two awesome shows!) we have two very strong female characters in gripping and different storylines. Even when I think back (and hey, I mention it because it’s Netflix related too) one of my all-time favourites: Gilmore Girls. So good and back soon…hopefully for real ;) But for a rather long time now I was looking for a girl of my taste. After Claire Danes (sorry, love) got a little too winey and cringy-faced in „Homeland“ I kind of stopped watching the show…and I am not the classic, elegant woman Viola Davis or Kerry Washington portray. So Jessica Jones is my kind of girl. Jeans, leather jacket, doesn’t give a shit and deep down sensitive and hurt. What’s buried down there I most likely can’t even guess yet.

I am so excited to continue watching this show and am going to treat myself to one episode right now. You should too!

Thanks for Reading.
